Career Capital

As I continue reading this book, "So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skill Trumps Passion", the arguments presented just cannot be defended. I feel I should have landed on this book before.

In any business, capital remains the integral element. What is a capital? Capital is anything that grants value or benefit to its owner. In other words, capital can be anything (financial assets in a business, a factory, a machine, or intellectual property).

Viktor Frankl stressed searching for the meaning of life. One way to do this is to land on a career that will lead us to a place of fulfilling our purpose in life. There is a close bond shared between career and purpose of life. A career is the first battleground where we start to learn about our personal growth. It is the sphere of duty where we find our true motivation to contribute, to build, to transform, and to create what has been invisible till now (our dreams, our imaginations, and our innovations). It is the space where we feel the mesmerising cool breeze under the old neem tree at the scorching summertime noontime. The place we share with our colleagues is in creating fulfilling victories, inventions, creations, and satisfaction. We learn to feel satisfied right at the place of our work. These all things ultimately tell us about our purpose of life.

Having now discussed careers and the purpose of life, we need this career capital to ultimately fulfil the purpose of our lives.

I wove all these stories to draw your attention to this career capital. What is this career capital? This brings us to the craftsman mindset we discussed in our last post.

Traits to define great works

So, when I came across this "career capital" term, I started thinking about what actually gives my career that value or benefit. Is it the money we earn? Not that it doesn't give value to my career; rather, it is only the small incentives given to us as a recognition of the services we delivered being in this career. Then what is this capital element? It is nothing but the traits we learn or acquire that define our work as great. Let us spend some time to understand these golden traits.
